Originality

Alright, it’s Sunday 8pm and my bedtime is approaching, so let’s see what I can write with 30 minutes in front of me! 🚀

As I was officially starting to put my ideas for this project on paper, I thought: let me check what has already been done on the topic. And so, I googled “underwater noise art”. I didn’t expect to see much because it’s not a topic people really talk about (contrary to plastic pollution for example) but I was wrong! 😄 I found some very cool projects and artists who even dedicate their whole practice to the topic, recording their own underwater sounds.

Now, I can say it with excitement, having made the conscious effort to reframe my initial reaction, which sounded more like: oh shit, maybe my idea isn’t original enough. But then, seeing many different artists working on the same topic, each with their own little twist, confirmed what Julia Cameron, the author of The Artist’s Way, helped me realize earlier this year: originality isn’t necessarily about making something that has never been done, but about staying true to one’s own creative voice. As unique beings, we each have unique processes, stories, experiences, perspectives, etc. Even if the outcome might be similar, it’s not something worth worrying about. What matters is the process, the self-expression and the healing that takes place while we create.

Giving myself the permission to create and showing up every week for it is already huge. The rest (making it pretty, sharing it with others, having an impact, etc.) is extra.

Damn, the 30-minute timer is up already! I’ll leave you on this thought for now, and a screenshot of my first official steps towards something concrete. 🌟

This week’s watercolor was inspired by the trees on this beautiful spring day:
